Built by Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 World’s Fair, it was initially contested by some people. Dominating Paris from the top of its 324 meters, it is today the most visited paying monument in the world having welcomed more than 200 million visitors since its beginnings. It has inspired many artists, poets, painters, writers, filmmakers and remains one of the emblems of Paris.
